The characterful Upon chair by Sylvain Willenz comes down to one clever detail. As if by magic, the backrest sits on its contrasting metal frame with no fixings, but a hidden internal joint. This efficient piece of engineering makes the multi-functional chair well suited to stacking, but visually effortless too.

Upon’s form-pressed veneer backrest tapers out to just a 6mm edge, combining minimal looks, comfort and strength. Together, Zilio A&C and Sylvain Willenz have created a pure and expressive design that can adapt to all settings: the home, office, or café. Upon can be adapted to have an upholstered seat for further comfort, and an armchair version is in development. Design: Sylvain Willenz, 2020

Sylvain Willenz

Born in Brussels in 1978, Sylvain Willenz has lived consecutively in the US, Belgium and in the UK. He studied MA Design Products at the Royal College of Art in London, graduating in 2003. In 2004, he opened his Design Office, based in Brussels. With an approach to design characterized by a clear inquisitiveness for products, industry and processes, Sylvain Willenz and his team work on various projects ranging from lighting to products, electronics and furniture for renowned clients such as Established & Sons, HAY, Cappellini , Tamawa, Chevalier Editions, amongst others. In 2009, Sylvain Willenz was nominated Belgian Designer of the Year. His works have been granted several awards including iF Awards and Red Dot "Best of the Best" Awards. The Torch light series was nominated Best in Lighting and Overall Best Product of the Year at the UK Grand Designs Awards in 2009.
