A line of Mondaine watches is heavily influenced by classical Swiss railway clocks, called the Official Swiss Railways Watch/SBB, to a design licensed from the Swiss Federal Railways since 1986. This design, by Hans Hilfiker, originated in 1944.
The original movement was unlike other watches and unique because of the following fact: By spreading 58 seconds over the 360 degrees (rather than the usual 60 seconds), the second hand comes to a complete stop at the 12 numeral for two seconds, giving the illusion that time has stopped. Then, the minute hand advances one step and the second hand starts a new cycle. However the company stopped making models with this mechanism around 2001. In 2013, a redesigned model was launched under the name stop2go. In keeping with how the movement itself works, the crown is shaped like a rocker switch that you flip back and forth instead of winding. This element is as practical as it is distinctive.
Moooi was founded in 2001 by Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers and is named after their native Dutch word for beautiful – the third ‘o’ in the brand name stands for an extra value in terms of beauty & uniqueness.
In addition to Marcel Wanders’ designs, the Moooi portfolio contains a range of work from other nationally and internationally recognized designers. The collections style is exclusive, daring, playful, exquisite and based on the belief that design is a question of love. The founding pillars of the Myyour philosophy are the surprising stateliness of its products and the distinction of a manufacturing process, which is meticulously followed as to ensure perfection; from the development of the project to the selection of the materials, but also from the execution of the project to the attention and care that are paid to every single minimum detail along the way.
The moulds had been scrapped: all that remained were the drawings or, at the most, some reject pieces.
But since these were products like Joe Colombo’s Multichair or Rodolfo Bonetto’s 4/4, we couldn’t accept their loss. And so, B-LINE’s beginnings were dictated more by a gut feeling than a rational calculation: we wanted to restore splendour to objects that, because they were ingeniously simple and aesthetically interesting, were intrinsically precious.
This was all happening in 1999.
From then on, our ambitions regarding good designing came to fruition in the form of international collaborations and, besides the several items we consider heritage (see the item Boby), we manufacture furnishing products for the home, office and contract. The materials we use are plastic, steel, fabric and wood and we are extremely flexible where the technologies to be deployed are concerned.
In this quest of ours for the perfect combination between versatility, originality and functionality, we involved both the creative genius of Karim Rashid as well as the Zen essentiality of Kazuhide Takahama or perhaps the inspiration of a newcomer at his debut: what absolutely counts for us is the quality of the design. Having singled that out, B-LINE’s team and the designers work hand in hand through to the selection of materials, covering all technical aspects, to turn out products entirely made in Italy.
