A 25-year-old icon.
“Juicy Salif”, the twentieth century’s most controversial Citrus-squeezer, celebrates its 25th anniversary. Designed by Philippe Starck in 1990,
“Juicy Salif” has become an icon and one of the most popular items in the Alessi catalogue (1). The genesis of this article is well-known, sketched
on a pizzeria paper napkin (2) among the hard-to-decipher food stains. A plate of squid that called for a squeeze of lemon juice provided
Philippe Starck with the inspiration for what was to become one of the most controversial conversation pieces of the nineties, generating
innumerable heated discussions about its nature and meaning. To celebrate this important anniversary, two special versions of the Citrus-squeezer
have been produced. The first,is for all “Juicy Salif” fans. Its aluminium core is coated in matt white ceramic (3). A non-colour that enhances its
shape and lends it an abstract air, highlighting its iconic value. The ceramic coating permits contact with foodstuffs and use in the kitchen. “Juicy
Salif” comes in special packaging, developed in collaboration with the designer. This version is joined by a more precious bronze version,
produced in a numbered series and included in the Officina Alessi catalogue.
